CHAPTER 10
Wednesday morning began early with a knock on the door. Enid opened the door, her eyes half closed.
“Good morning, Aunt Enid.”
“Good morning dear. Your knock on the door is beginning to be my wake up call!”
“I know. Sorry!”
“Not a problem, but I do need to have a key made for you. Come on in. How was Rachel this morning?”
“She was okay. She rested well last night and didn’t seem stressed when I left. She did tell me to hurry back.”
“How did you rest?”
“So-so, I guess. I dreamed a lot. I know I did, but I can’t remember much. Probably a good thing.”
“I know you don’t have much time, so you go on and shower and get ready for school. I’ll make you a breakfast sandwich and fill a coffee mug so you can leave and not have to drive so fast.”
“That sounds like a good idea. What about you?”
“I’m fine although still half asleep. I’ll have breakfast and shower after you leave.”
Thirty minutes later, Miranda left for school. Thirty minutes after that, Enid left for the library.
As soon as she got to the library and deposited her belongings in her office, Enid began searching the microfilm in earnest beginning with the news articles on the roll for The Bakersville Guardian. In rapid succession, she found at least one article and sometimes two or three on each of the ancestors of Eli, Howard, Adeline, and Charlie all in chronological order, all during 1860, and all matching the documents Benjamin had copied.
As I suspected, Enid thought, the list is in order of appearance on the film. Benjamin must have worked from the census list looking for the first name to appear in the Guardian. The articles matched those in the stapled sets Grace had collected and hidden. After skimming each in turn, Enid printed the pages on which each of the articles appeared.
I need at least two more before I switch to court records as Patrick isn’t inclined to treat these four as suspects, at least not for now. She continued rolling the microfilm forward.
This time, she had to scroll all the way to May 1861 before she found anything about anyone else on the list. Sure enough, the next person found was the ancestor of number five, Brother Robert Allen. Enid skimmed the article, which mentioned an upcoming trial date. She pressed the print button and looked at her watch.
I would stop, but I would like to find the article discussing the trial and its verdict, and I would like to find at least one more ancestor. She scrolled forward quickly until she reached the trial date and then slowed down. She soon found the article on the trial and its verdict.
“Good.” She looked around to see if any patrons had entered the genealogy room or heard her. Reassured she remained alone, she continued talking to herself. “I’ll look a little longer and then switch to court records. I hate for Brother Robert to be the first suspect we interview, but that’s how we said we would proceed.
